Honoring Client Choice
For every new placement, families and conservators must understand that person-centered care is a required and non-negotiable part of BIM Supportive Living LLC's service model. Our services are guided by the California Department of Developmental Services, the Regional Center system, the client's Individual Program Plan, and applicable California requirements.
When a client can communicate their wants, needs, and preferences — verbally, through behavior, assistive communication, or another recognized method — BIM will make reasonable efforts to honor those choices when they support the client's individual goals, growth, development, independence, and health and safety.
When Family Preferences Differ from Client Choices
At times, a parent's or conservator's preferences may differ from the client's expressed choices or assessed needs. In those situations, BIM's decisions will remain person-centered and will consider:
The purpose of Supportive Living Services is to help each client strengthen the skills necessary to exercise greater choice, participate in the community, and live as independently as possible. Family participation is valued; however, involvement in daily household or staffing decisions must not interfere with the client's goals, the rights of roommates, staff responsibilities, or the stability of the placement.
Family Involvement & Household Boundaries
Please note — for the safety and dignity of everyone in the home, families and conservators must not:
Question, counsel, discipline, redirect, or advise another client on behavioral, medical, personal, or situational matters
Independently confront or attempt to manage another resident
Discuss concerns with roommates, other clients, neighbors, or off-duty staff
Concerns about another resident should always be reported privately to BIM management
Confidentiality You Can Count On
BIM will not disclose a roommate's diagnosis, services, behaviors, schedule, preferences, personal concerns, communications, health information, or other confidential information. Staff may acknowledge that a concern was received but cannot discuss another client's circumstances or care.
Keeping Placements Stable
Families and conservators are expected to conduct all conversations in a manner that protects confidentiality, personal dignity, household stability, and the health and safety of everyone in the home. Concerns should be directed to the assigned BIM manager or administrator rather than discussed with roommates, other clients, neighbors, or off-duty staff.
Failure to follow these expectations may require a planning-team meeting with the client, conservator, BIM, and Regional Center to establish corrective boundaries and protect the continued stability of the placement.
